Shop Local and Be Friendly!

What Advice do you have for Small Business Owners in Fresno?

As most small business owners know it is difficult to grow your business and most small businesses fail.  After many years of serving and working as a pastor in local Fresno churches I have learned some things that I think can help anyone in business for themselves. Whether you are selling or investing in real estate, own a pool company or provide health and fitness services, you need to understand the power of our interactions.  Our beloved Starbucks understands this full well.  I will actually drive past other coffee shops to get to a Starbucks where I know I will be warmly greeted and thanked for stopping by.

The other day I found myself wandering through a local Target (I must have been looking for some living “essential,” like a pizza cutter) I ran into an old friend’s mom.  At first I thought to myself, “just smile and keep moving, you are too busy.” It must have been at least 18 years since I have seen her last (I was a kid and now she could barely recognized me).  I reintroduced myself to her, she gave me a big hug, I’m sure recalling some trouble that her son and I must have caused years ago.  She said to me, “How’s business?  I drive by your sign everyday.” I was a bit surprised, because I hadn’t thought about her in years.  She was with one of her sons (not my friend).  She said to me, “This son will be ready to buy a new home in a couple months.  Do you have a card?”  I did and I also was reminded of a couple very important things that day.

1. Shop local… not only do you help your local economy but you may just run into someone who knows you and do business with you in the future.
2. Be friendly… if I didn’t stop and chat for 3 minutes I don’t make that connection.  At the end of the day it is about building relationships and building a network of people interested in doing business with people they know and like.
Whatever form(s) of marketing you use (blog, websites, road signs, postcards etc) remember people may recognize you.  Smile and be friendly!
