School is almost out! Fresno Unified will wrap up the 2011-2012 school year on June 15th. While some people are looking forward to summer and the freedom to not have a schedule, others are looking for ways to occupy their children during these warm, summer months. Here are some helpful links and suggestions for making the best use of your summer!
DAY CAMPS
Fresno Chaffee Zoo and San Joaquin River Parkway offer day camps for kids. These are great options for parents who work full time or just want to keep your kids active.
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
VBS events are held at various churches throughout Fresno Ca. VBS is a fun, inexpensive, way to get your child involved in fun summer activities. These are a sampling of a few but does not include all Fresno area VBS‘s. Click on the links below for dates, times and costs for each event.

The Top 3 Family Friendly Parks in the Clovis North Area of Fresno
The Top 3 Clovis North Area Parks
The Clovis North area of Fresno and Clovis is some of the most sought after real estate in all of the central valley. Not only does the Clovis North area boast some of the highest performing schools in the valley, it is also home to some of the most family friendly parks. If you have little ones at home or just love great neighborhoods with great parks, then the Clovis North area is for you!

1. Copper River Ranch Park (Near Friant Rd & Copper Ave)
Copper River Park
This is a smaller family-friendly facility that is located in the heart of the Copper River Ranch community. It is a great place to have a fun family day. Plenty of grassy area to enjoy throwing around a frisbee or ball and open spaces to enjoy the views of the nearby mountains. In case you feel like BBQ-ing there is one there along with a nice covered eating area as well. For both younger and older children, there is a large covered playground area that includes a large play structure equipped with a slide and climbing wall. There is also a full size basketball court (sport court) as as well as two areas of swings.
2. Todd Beamer Park (Maple & Plymouth)

Located across from Copper Hills Elementary, this large park was built in 2010 to honor 9/11 hero, Todd Beamer. At Todd Beamer Park you will find many ways to enjoy a Saturday afternoon with the entire family. Massive play structure…check! Soccer field…check! Water play area…check! Basketball court…check! Skate park…check! Fenced in Dog Park… check! Be sure to pack a lunch and enjoy the picnic pavilion and more. And oh yeah, the best shaved ice you have ever had!
3. Harlan Ranch Park (Shepherd & Leonard)
The main park at Harlan Ranch is located at the center of the Harlan Ranch community – it is massive! Included at this park is a large outdoor amphitheater, BBQ’s, Jr Olympic pool (for residents only) and It is conveniently located across from Bud Rank Elementary school, one of the top 3 feeder schools in the Clovis North area with the highest growth API scores. The park has two play structures, one for older children and one for younger children. As if the main Harlan Ranch park wasn’t enough, Harlan Ranch offer 11 lush community parks and miles of walking path options.

Eye-Q California Classic Weekend – FRE’s Laura Wilkinson

Eye-Q California Classic
This weekend Fresno Ca will host the Eye-Q California Classic Weekend. I (Laura Wilkinson) have had the pleasure of participating in this weekend and it is a great, top notch local event. It is a fun time and another great way to get to know your city. I enjoy the downtown venue; it is well organized, and draws active people from all over the Central Valley. Sometimes the only thing that keeps me training is knowing an event like this is right around the corner! I will participate in the mini metric ride on Saturday and the 2-person relay on Sunday. Events like the Eye-Q California Classic Weekend are an easy to get involved, whether you want to ride, run, volunteer, or just cheer the participants on it is a good time for everybody!
Thursday & Friday
The weekend will start on Thursday and Friday with a two day fitness expo hosted by TERRIO Physical Therapy and Fitness.
Saturday
Saturday kicks off 3 bike rides: The Rabobank Classic Century, Classic Metric, and the 35-Mile Mini Metric. Riders have the opportunity to ride 10 miles on Highway 168 without any vehicle traffic. The ten miles takes riders from McKinley to Shepherd Avenue. Rest stops are approximately every 20 miles. Each rest stop will be well stocked with food/energy drinks and portable toilets. Music entertainment will even be found at each stop for all to enjoy.
Sunday
Sunday it’s time for the 2nd annual Eye-Q California Classic Half Marathon. This is a fun, flat run with over 3, 500 participants. The Half Marathon route begins and ends inside Chukchansi Park. The route takes runners through downtown Fresno, through Chaffee Zoo, and on through the Tower District. There is also the 2-person Half Marathon Relay. The Relay is presented by Fresno Clovis Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. This event is a walker-friendly course.

I Love Fresno and Clovis Ca! I (Matt Heinricy) was born and raised here, went to college here, raising my own family here and plan on staying here until my time is done. I know many native Fresnans who have moved away, vowing to never return, and yet like a gravitational pull they have been drawn back here. The reasons why?
The Top 3 Reasons to Love and Live In Fresno
1. LOCATION: I know what you thinking, “What did he just say?” Yes, I said it… location. One of the greatest reasons I love this community is that we are close to everything. We are 2 hours from some of the most beautiful coast lines and only 45 minutes from some of the most incredible mountain ranges in the world. Fresno and Clovis are also home to some of the most mild and enjoyable winters and summer nights.
2. FAMILY FRIENDLY: Fresno is also a large enough city to enjoy and yet small town friendly enough for you to not feel lost! This is a great place to raise a family and enjoy life. Many families chose to live in the Fresno and Clovis area and say that this is one of the most friendly and inviting places they have ever lived.
3. AFFORDABILITY: Well, this one might be a little harder sell – however, as far as California goes, we here in the Central Valley, have some of the most affordable housing and some of the best built homes anywhere.

3. Tenaya Park…
Tenaya Park
is a small park nestled in a desirable Northwest Fresno neighborhood. Located on West Sample, just south of Sierra, between Palm and Fruit. It is small and quaint, easy to keep your eye on your little ones while they play. I have to mention this park; it is one of my favorites. Surrounded by an expansive grassy area with sidewalk this is a fun place to bring bikes and scooters. Dogs are welcome in this northwest Fresno neighborhood. This park is family friendly and has a great neighborhood feel. The park is maintained by 143 homeowners who pay additional taxes. The park is open to the public, closes at 10 p.m., and alcohol is prohibited. Fresno Unified’s Gibson Elementary, Starr Elementary, and Kratt Elementary are all close by to serve children kindergarten to sixth grade.
